Constitution of the Coffee Farmers Party (CFP)

PREAMBLE

We, the coffee farmers of Kenya, united in purpose and bound by a shared commitment to dignity, prosperity, and justice, establish the Coffee Farmers Party (CFP) as a political movement dedicated to restoring the power, voice, and economic rights of smallholder coffee growers.

Guided by principles of fairness, transparency, sustainability, and farmer-centered governance, we adopt this Constitution to organize, protect, and advance our collective interests.


ARTICLE 1: NAME, SYMBOL, AND IDENTITY

1.1 Name

The name of the party shall be Coffee Farmers Party (CFP).

1.2 Abbreviation

The official abbreviation shall be CFP.

1.3 Symbol

The party symbol shall be a coffee branch with cherries, representing growth, resilience, and unity.

1.4 Colors

The party colors shall be coffee brown, green, and white, symbolizing the soil, the crop, and integrity.

1.5 Motto

“From Farm to Power”.


ARTICLE 2: VALUES AND PRINCIPLES

The Coffee Farmers Party shall be founded upon the following core values:

  1. Farmer Sovereignty – power belongs to the producers of the nation’s wealth.
  2. Equity and Fair Trade – fair income, fair markets, and fair policies.
  3. Transparency and Accountability – zero tolerance for corruption in the coffee value chain.
  4. Youth Inclusion – meaningful participation of young people in farming and agribusiness.
  5. Women Empowerment – equal access to land, finance, opportunities, and leadership.
  6. Environmental Regeneration – sustainable agriculture, soil restoration, and climate resilience.
  7. Innovation and Digital Governance – modernization of agriculture through technology.

ARTICLE 3: OBJECTIVES OF THE PARTY

The objectives of CFP shall be to:

  1. Advocate for fair prices and market protections for coffee farmers.
  2. Reform the national coffee laws, cooperatives, and payment systems.
  3. Promote direct trade, specialty coffee, and farmer-owned markets.
  4. Champion youth-led agritech innovation.
  5. Lobby for affordable credit and insurance for farmers.
  6. Protect farmer land rights and eliminate exploitation.
  7. Promote value addition, local consumption, and domestic roasting.
  8. Ensure representation of farmers at all levels of government.
  9. Strengthen coffee tourism and rural economic growth.
  10. Support inter-county collaboration among coffee-growing regions.

ARTICLE 4: MEMBERSHIP

4.1 Eligibility

Membership is open to:

  • Coffee farmers,
  • Workers in the coffee value chain,
  • Youth and women involved in agribusiness,
  • Supporters of farmer-led governance.

4.2 Categories

  1. Ordinary Members – registered coffee farmers and value chain actors.
  2. Youth Members – members aged 18–35.
  3. Honorary Members – individuals supporting CFP’s objectives.
  4. Institutional Members – farmer groups, cooperatives, and associations.

4.3 Rights of Members

Members shall have the right to:

ARTICLE 4: MEMBERSHIP

4.1 Eligibility
Membership is open to:

· Coffee farmers,
· Workers in the coffee value chain,
· Youth and women involved in agribusiness,
· Supporters of farmer-led governance.

4.2 Categories

· Ordinary Members – registered coffee farmers and value chain actors.
· Youth Members – members aged 18–35.
· Honorary Members – individuals supporting CFP’s objectives.
· Institutional Members – farmer groups, cooperatives, and associations.

4.3 Rights of Members
Members shall have the right to:

· Participate in party meetings and activities.
· Vote in internal party elections.
· Contest for party positions in accordance with this Constitution.
· Access information on party programs and finances.
· Submit proposals and petitions to party organs.

4.4 Obligations of Members
Members shall be obligated to:

· Uphold the Constitution, values, and objectives of the CFP.
· Pay prescribed membership fees and annual subscriptions.
· Promote the party’s image and interests.
· Adhere to the decisions of the party’s governing bodies.

4.5 Termination of Membership
Membership may be terminated by:

· Resignation in writing.
· Non-payment of subscriptions for a continuous period of two years.
· Expulsion following disciplinary action for gross misconduct, including actions that bring the party into disrepute.


ARTICLE 5: PARTY STRUCTURE AND GOVERNANCE

5.1 The National Delegates Congress (NDC)

· The NDC shall be the supreme organ of the party.
· It shall be composed of democratically elected delegates from all county chapters.
· It shall convene every five (5) years, or in a special session as needed.
· Powers: To amend the Constitution, formulate broad party policy, elect the National Executive Council, and approve presidential candidates.

5.2 The National Executive Council (NEC)

· The NEC shall be the principal executive organ of the party.
· It shall manage the party’s affairs between sessions of the NDC.
· It shall be composed of:
· The Party Leader
· Deputy Party Leader
· Secretary-General
· Deputy Secretary-General
· National Treasurer
· Representatives from each coffee-growing region.
· Chairperson of the Youth League.
· Chairperson of the Women’s League.

5.3 The Secretariat

· Headed by the Secretary-General, the Secretariat shall be the administrative arm of the party, implementing the decisions of the NEC and managing day-to-day operations.

5.4 County, Constituency, and Ward Chapters

· The party shall establish structures at the County, Constituency, and Ward levels to ensure grassroots representation and mobilization.

5.5 The Youth League (CFP-YL)

· The CFP Youth League shall mobilize young people and articulate issues affecting the youth.

5.6 The Women’s League (CFP-WL)

· The CFP Women’s League shall champion the rights and representation of women in the coffee sector and within the party.


ARTICLE 6: ELECTIONS AND LEADERSHIP

6.1 Party Leader

· The Party Leader shall be the national symbol and chief spokesperson of the CFP.
· Must be a life member of the party and a practicing coffee farmer for at least ten years.

6.2 Internal Party Elections

· All party elections shall be conducted through a secret ballot.
· The principle of free and fair competition shall be upheld.
· Party primaries for electoral candidates shall be conducted democratically and transparently.

6.3 Code of Conduct

· All office bearers and members shall adhere to a strict code of conduct that prohibits divisive ethnicity, corruption, and violence.


ARTICLE 7: FINANCE AND ASSETS

7.1 Sources of Funds
The party’s funds shall be derived from:

· Membership registration fees and annual subscriptions.
· Voluntary contributions from members and well-wishers.
· Fundraising activities.
· Grants and donations, provided they do not compromise the party’s sovereignty.

7.2 Financial Management

· The National Treasurer shall be responsible for the party’s funds.
· The party shall maintain bank accounts in its name.
· All expenditures shall be approved in accordance with procedures set by the NEC.
· The party’s accounts shall be audited annually by an independent firm.


ARTICLE 8: AMENDMENT PROCEDURE

8.1 Proposal for Amendment
Any proposed amendment to this Constitution must be submitted in writing to the Secretary-General by at least one-third of the County Chapters or one-quarter of the NEC members.

8.2 Ratification
For an amendment to be adopted,it must be supported by a two-thirds (2/3) majority vote of the delegates present and voting at a National Delegates Congress.


ARTICLE 9: TRANSITIONAL AND CONCLUDING PROVISIONS

9.1 Inaugural Elections
An interim National Executive Committee shall be formed to oversee the first National Delegates Congress within six months of the party’s registration.

9.2 Dissolution
The party may only be dissolved by a resolution supported by at least three-quarters(3/4) of the delegates at a specially convened National Delegates Congress. In the event of dissolution, all assets shall be transferred to a charitable organization with similar objectives, as determined by the NEC.
