Message from Alfred Gitau Mwaura — Founder, Kenya Coffee School™ & GOOD Trade Certification™

Kenya Coffee School was founded to connect the dignity of Kenyan coffee farmers with the skill, science, and global opportunity found in every cup. Over the years, we have trained baristas, youth, and cooperatives who now lead the conversation on quality, sustainability, and ethical trade.

The transition to Kenya Coffee Skills Open University™ (KCS-OU™) marks a bold step forward — transforming coffee education into an academic and research-based discipline that bridges farms, technology, and markets.

This initiative aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and global SDGs, creating a new pathway for youth employment, climate resilience, and digital coffee innovation.
KCS-OU™ will collaborate with government, academia, and industry partners to position Kenya as Africa’s hub of coffee excellence and sustainable value creation.

The Kenya Coffee Skills Open University™ (KCS-OU™) evolves from a decade of specialized coffee education, youth mentorship, and industry partnerships under Kenya Coffee School™, Barista Mtaani™, and GOOD Trade Certification™.

Following the Mount Kenya University (MKU) model, KCS-OU™ remains a private, charter-seeking university, governed by a Board of Trustees. The charter will not transfer ownership to the state but will formalize accreditation and degree-awarding authority.

The Open University framework promotes flexibility, inclusivity, and digital access—connecting smallholder farmers, youth, and professionals to globally relevant coffee knowledge and certifications.
