Kenya Coffee School GIS, Climate Resilience, and Traceability is primarily integrated into the following specialized modules under the African Coffee Education (ACE) Qualification Framework:
☕ Core GIS and Climate Resilience Modules
The two most relevant modules directly addressing Environmental Sciences are focused on the technical and strategic application of geospatial data and climate adaptation.
| Module Name | Core Focus & Skills Acquired | Duration & Cost | Target Audience |
|---|---|---|---|
| GIS Technology & Mapping Traceability | Learn to map farm polygons using GPS coordinates, integrate satellite data (like Copernicus NDVI layers), and implement digital systems (e.g., Blockchain) to achieve EUDR Compliance and transparent supply chains. | 4–5 Weeks | Cooperative Managers, Agronomists, Export Professionals, Traceability Specialists |
| Climate Change / Circular Economy in Coffee | Focuses on climate-smart agriculture (CSA), regenerative farming, water conservation, and risk assessment. Teaches how to translate climate data into disaster readiness and resilience plans for coffee farms. | 4–5 Weeks | Farmers, Cooperative Leaders, Field Officers, Sustainability Managers |
| 💡 Additional Modules for a Full Resilience Strategy | |||
| These modules provide the necessary context and business skills to make the climate resilience strategies profitable and scalable: |
- Soil Analysis / Regenerative Coffee / Biodiversity: This module emphasizes the foundational scientific practices that mitigate climate change impacts, such as enhancing soil health, water retention, and carbon sequestration.
- Green Coffee Module: This includes training on Coffee Trade Certification & EUDR Compliance, which is the primary driver for integrating GIS-based traceability to prove coffee is not sourced from deforested land.
- Vertical Coffee Value Chains / Applied Sciences: Helps professionals understand the full business lifecycle, enabling them to secure premium market access for the traceable, climate-resilient coffee produced.
Enrollment and Certification Details - Duration: Each specialized module generally runs for 4 to 5 weeks.
- Cost (Single Module): The approximate investment for a single module is Ksh. 35,000 (Ksh. 20,000 for the module fee + Ksh. 15,000 for Training & Certification/Exams).
- Certification: Completing a set number of modules earns points towards the KCS Coffee Skills Diploma, certified by KCS. The GIS & Digital Traceability module is typically part of the Professional Level of study.
The overarching philosophy of KCS is to train a new generation of coffee leaders who are “Digitally Fluent Specialists” capable of integrating data, GIS, and ERP systems into coffee operations.
