Brewing Opportunity: Investing in Barista Mtaani is Investing in Economic Empowerment

The Barista Mtaani initiative, a flagship program of the Kenya Coffee School (KCS), is built on a powerful social mission: leveraging Kenya’s coffee wealth to create dignified, sustainable economic opportunities for youth and women in local communities (mtaani).

Despite producing some of the world’s most sought-after coffee, many Kenyan women and youth remain locked out of the high-value segments of the industry (roasting, retailing, café ownership). Barista Mtaani actively bridges this gap.

Our Impact Model:

  • Skills for the Underserved: We bring high-quality, subsidized, and accessible training directly to vulnerable and marginalized communities.
  • Job Creation, Not Just Skills: Graduates are supported in launching their own micro-enterprises—mobile coffee carts, kiosks, or small roasteries—turning them into employers and value-adders.
  • Gender Inclusion: The program specifically focuses on training and mentoring women, helping them overcome systemic barriers to business ownership and leadership within the coffee sector.

By creating a robust, locally driven specialty coffee market, Barista Mtaani ensures that the economic benefits circulate within the community, directly supporting local families and farmers.

This is more than a training program; it is a movement of social change. For partners and investors focused on SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality), Barista Mtaani offers a proven, scalable model for genuine economic empowerment.

Join the mission: Support the Kenya Coffee School and the Barista Mtaani initiative and help us brew a more equitable future for Kenya.
