The Open Education Skills (OSE™) Competence Index System

A distinctive feature of Open Education Skills (OSE™) is the Competence Index System, developed by Alfred Gitau Mwaura to place emphasis on what learners are able to demonstrate in practice, not only on what they know in theory.

The Competence Index System provides a structured framework for assessing and developing professional capabilities across the coffee and hospitality industries. Rather than relying solely on examinations, the system evaluates learners through practical performance, workplace readiness, ethical conduct, innovation, and continuous improvement.

Within Barista Skills, Specialty Coffee, Customer Service, and Mixology, the Competence Index measures proficiency in key areas, including:

  • Technical coffee preparation and beverage production.
  • Espresso extraction and brewing consistency.
  • Coffee cupping and sensory evaluation.
  • ABCVA™ Sensory Systems competency.
  • Coffee Quality Analysis (CQA™).
  • Customer service excellence and guest experience.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Workplace professionalism and ethics.
  • Leadership, teamwork, and supervision.
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Innovation and product development.
  • Occupational health and safety.
  • Entrepreneurship and business management.
  • Sustainability and responsible coffee practices.
  • Digital literacy and technology application.

The Competence Index encourages learners to progress through measurable stages of professional development, enabling trainers, employers, and students to monitor growth, identify strengths, and target areas for improvement. It supports lifelong learning by recognising that professional excellence is built through continuous practice, mentorship, reflection, and real-world experience.

By integrating the OSE™ Competence Index System into its programmes, Kenya Coffee School and Barista Mtaani seek to develop graduates who are not only technically competent but also adaptable, customer-focused, innovative, and prepared to contribute meaningfully to Kenya’s coffee and hospitality industries.

OSE™ Competence Index Philosophy

Knowledge + Practical Skills + Professional Behaviour + Innovation + Industry Experience = Workplace Competence

Developed by Alfred Gitau Mwaura as part of the Open Education Skills (OSE™) framework to strengthen competency-based education and workforce development in coffee, hospitality, and related industries.
