1. What is the Omega-3 Index?

  • The omega-3 index measures the percentage of EPA + DHA (two critical omega-3 fatty acids) in red blood cell membranes.
  • A higher index (≥8%) = lower risk of heart disease, dementia, and inflammation.
  • A low index (≤4%) = higher risk of chronic disease.

2. Does Coffee Contain Omega-3s?

  • Coffee beans and brewed coffee contain negligible amounts of omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Main lipids in coffee are diterpenes (cafestol, kahweol) and linoleic/oleic acids, but almost no EPA/DHA.
  • Coffee itself does not directly raise the omega-3 index.

3. Coffee’s Indirect Influence on Omega-3 Status

  • Metabolism & Inflammation: Coffee polyphenols (chlorogenic acids, cafestol) may reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, which enhances omega-3 benefits in the body.
  • Lipid metabolism: Some studies suggest coffee can slightly alter lipid absorption and fatty acid metabolism, but effects are modest.

Since coffee doesn’t naturally provide omega-3s, researchers and companies are experimenting with:
