How It Works — The Kenya Coffee School & Barista Mtaani Model

At Kenya Coffee School (KCS™) and Barista Mtaani, we believe that true coffee mastery is achieved through competency-based learning — where skills, not theory, define excellence.
Our model follows the principles of TVET and GOOD Trade Certification (G4T), ensuring that every learner is industry-ready, confident, and employable.

1️⃣ Occupational Standards

Each training program is built on industry-defined standards.
Coffee experts, farmers, roasters, and baristas collaborate to define the exact knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for every role — from barista and roaster to café manager and green coffee buyer.

“We train to standard, not to time.”

This means every student graduates only when they can demonstrate mastery of their craft — whether brewing a perfect espresso or managing a farm-to-cup business.

2️⃣ Learner-Centered Approach

We put the learner at the heart of the training process.
Our trainers act as facilitators and mentors, guiding youth through practical experiences, simulations, and industry immersion.

  • Learners practice, perform, and reflect rather than just listen.
  • Classrooms transform into cafés, cupping labs, and roasting studios.
  • Every learner builds confidence through real-world exposure.

“We don’t just teach coffee — we teach curiosity, creativity, and confidence.”

3️⃣ Competency-Based Assessment

At KCS™ and Barista Mtaani™, assessment is not about passing exams — it’s about proving capability.

Students are evaluated through:

  • Practical demonstrations (e.g., brewing, roasting, customer service)
  • Portfolio evidence (projects, community service, café internships)
  • Peer and mentor reviews (reflective learning and growth tracking)

“Competence is proven by doing — not by guessing.”

Once a learner demonstrates proficiency, they earn a KCS Competency Certificate — recognized across Kenya and internationally through GOOD Trade Certification (G4T).

4️⃣ Quality Assurance

Every training and assessment stage undergoes strict quality assurance to maintain fairness, reliability, and global recognition.

  • Trainers are industry-certified and pedagogically trained
  • Courses are aligned with Kenya’s TVET Authority (TVETA) and Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET)
  • Feedback loops ensure continuous improvement and innovation

“Quality isn’t an act — it’s our culture.”

🌍 Our Promise

Through this system, Kenya Coffee School and Barista Mtaani ensure that every learner becomes a skilled professional, every class produces a practitioner, and every graduate embodies the excellence of Kenyan coffee.

“From the farm to the cup — competency is our currency.”
