Introduction
Coffee is cultivated in more than 70 countries across the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. These countries lie within a geographical zone known as the Coffee Belt, stretching between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Within this belt, suitable temperatures, rainfall, altitude, and soils provide ideal conditions for growing coffee.
Globally, coffee is among the most traded agricultural commodities and supports the livelihoods of over 100 million people. It generates billions of dollars annually through farming, processing, export, roasting, retail, equipment manufacturing, logistics, hospitality, and tourism.
Coffee production is broadly divided between Arabica (Coffea arabica) and Robusta (Coffea canephora). These countries specialize in high-quality Arabica coffee grown at high elevations.
Asia and Oceania
Major producers include:
- Vietnam

Vietnam is the world’s largest producer of Robusta coffee and a key supplier to the instant coffee industry.

Arabica vs. Robusta Production

- Temperature: 18–24°C
- Annual rainfall: 1,200–2,000 mm
- Well-drained, fertile soils
- Moderate shade

Robusta Coffee
Robusta thrives under different conditions:
- Altitude: Sea level to 900 metres
- Temperature: 22–30°C
- Higher tolerance to heat

- Stronger, more bitter taste
- Higher caffeine content
- Greater body
- Widely used in espresso blends and instant coffee
Factors Influencing Coffee Production
Successful coffee farming depends on several interconnected factors:
Climate
Coffee requires:
- Stable temperatures
- Reliable rainfall
- Adequate sunshine
- Moderate humidity
Climate change has disrupted these conditions in many producing countries through prolonged droughts, irregular rainfall, and increased pest pressure.
Altitude
Higher elevations generally produce slower bean development, resulting in denser beans and more complex flavours. This is one reason Kenyan coffees are highly sought after.
Soil
Coffee grows best in:

Kenyan Arabica is prized for its bright acidity, full body, and distinctive blackcurrant, citrus, and berry flavour notes.
Maintaining this reputation requires continuous investment in research, farmer training, quality control, climate adaptation, and value addition.
