In coffee cupping, ground coffee in water brews for a standard, undisturbed 4 minutes before the crust is broken, evaluated, and stirred. After breaking the crust (around minute 4), the coffee continues to cool, with active tasting typically occurring at 8–10 minutes, and potentially again at 12–15 minutes as different flavor notes emerge.

Key Coffee Cupping Timing Details:

  • Initial Brew Time: 4 minutes.
  • Crust Breaking: After 4 minutes, the floating grounds are pushed down, and foam is removed.
  • Tasting/Evaluation: Usually begins after 8-10 minutes, when the coffee has cooled to a safe, comfortable temperature, with multiple, subsequent tasting rounds encouraged.
  • Roast Rest Time: Coffee is ideally rested for at least 8 to 24 hours (or up to 4-5 days for some) after roasting.

Cupping Therapy Wait Times:

  • Duration: Cups are usually left in place for 5 to 15 minutes.
  • First-timers: Typically start with shorter sessions (approx. 5 minutes) to test tolerance.
  • General Sessions: Often last 15 to 25 minutes in total, including prep and movement.
