Kenya Coffee School – Research Centre for Ecological Change

Coffee is not only an agricultural product — it is a climate sensor.

Kenya Coffee School is establishing the Research Centre for Ecological Change (RCEC) to become Africa’s first science-led coffee intelligence hub — integrating coffee science, climate data, earth observation, soil microbiology and youth innovation.

Our Mission

To generate new knowledge that protects farmers, empowers youth, and builds climate resilience in coffee growing regions.

Our Core Focus Areas

DomainWhat we study
Climate Change Impactrainfall failures, heat stress, disease migration
Planetary Geology for Coffeevolcanic lineage, rift valley soils, mineral nutrition
GIS Mapping & Copernicus EOremote sensing for farm-level early warning
Agroecology & Biodiversityregenerative methods to restore farm ecosystems
Youth Tech Innovation by Barista Mtaani Hublow-cost tools, sensors, and AI models for farmers

Our Purpose

To turn Earth Science into farmer protection.

We don’t just analyse data.
We convert climate information into coffee livelihoods safety.

Our Output

  • predictive climate dashboards for coffee regions
  • training modules to teach youth climate risk modeling
  • peer-reviewed applied research papers on coffee ecology
  • open science data commons for coffee stakeholders
  • knowledge that feeds directly into Good Trade Certification

Transformation Thesis

Every coffee berry is a geological story.
Every roast curve is a reflection of the earth.
Every farmer deserves science-backed protection.

Kenya Coffee School Research Centre for Ecological Change
The future of coffee is scientific.
