Mtaa Hub: Democratizing Education at the Grassroots
Mtaa Hub is a flagship initiative of Open Skills Education, founded by Alfred Gitau Mwaura, created to make education accessible, affordable, and barrier-free at the community (mtaa) level.
Rooted in the belief that education is a human right, Mtaa Hubs take learning out of closed institutions and place it directly where people live, work, and create—the streets, villages, estates, and informal settlements of Kenya.
🌍 What Mtaa Hubs Stand For
Open access. Local relevance. Real skills.
Mtaa Hubs are Open Education Hubs designed to:
- Democratize education by removing financial, academic, and institutional barriers
- Deliver practical, employable, and entrepreneurial skills
- Support lifelong learning for youth, women, informal workers, and MSMEs
- Turn communities into living classrooms
Learning is not gated by fees, grades, or gatekeepers—it is open, modular, and community-driven.
🎯 Mission
To fight poverty through education by making high-quality skills training affordable and accessible for all, starting at the grassroots.
🧠 How Mtaa Hubs Work
Each Mtaa Hub functions as a neighbourhood learning node, offering:
- Skills training (technical, vocational, creative, digital, trade, agri-skills)
- Mentorship and peer-to-peer learning
- Community problem-solving and innovation
- Pathways to work, entrepreneurship, and value creation
No ivory towers. No exclusion. Just learning that meets people where they are.
🇰🇪 National & Global Alignment
Mtaa Hubs are intentionally aligned with:
- Kenya Vision 2030 – by building a skilled, productive, and inclusive workforce
- United Nations Sustainable Development Goals – particularly education, poverty reduction, decent work, and inequality reduction
This positions Mtaa Hubs as community-level infrastructure for national development.
💡 Education as a Human Right
At its core, Mtaa Hub redefines education:
- Not as a privilege
- Not as a commodity
- But as a public good and human right
By lowering cost, decentralizing access, and opening pathways, Mtaa Hubs ensure that no learner is left behind because of where they live or what they earn.
🏘️ The Big Idea
If every mtaa has access to skills, knowledge, and opportunity:
- Poverty reduces
- Innovation rises
- Communities become self-reliant
- Kenya’s development accelerates from the ground up
