Natural Value Traceability System (NVTS™) is an agtech / agricultural valuation platform developed by the Kenya Coffee School and invented by Alfred Gitau Mwaura. It aims to transform coffee from a simple commodity into a measurable natural capital asset class.

Core Idea

Traditional specialty coffee grading (e.g., SCA cupping scores) focuses mainly on sensory quality and physical attributes — essentially asking “Does it taste good?”

NVTS™ adds a second, complementary layer that evaluates the holistic value of the coffee across the entire production chain: environment, food safety, farmer livelihoods, cultural heritage, and market tradability.

The Five Pillars (100-Point Natural Value Score)

Each pillar is scored out of 20 points (total 100):

  1. Nature’s Gift (Environmental Integrity)
Soil health, biodiversity, shade trees, water conservation, regenerative practices, reduced chemical inputs.
  2. Food for People (Food System Integrity)
Food safety, post-harvest hygiene, fermentation and drying quality, contamination absence, biochemical integrity.
  3. Livelihood for Farmers (Economic Justice)
Transparent farmgate prices, profitability, farmer training, cooperative governance, community reinvestment.
  4. Cultural Experience (Heritage & Craft)
Traditional varieties, indigenous processing knowledge, local rituals, origin storytelling, community identity.
  5. Tradable Crop (Market Excellence)
SCA cup score alignment, physical bean quality, consistency, and market demand.

Example grades (approximate):

  • 95–100 → Regenerative Grand Reserve
  • 90–94 → Platinum Origin Coffee
  • 85–89 → Gold Sustainable Specialty
  • 80–84 → Certified Natural Specialty
  • Below 75 → closer to commodity coffee

A coffee lot can then be labeled with both scores, e.g., “SCA 87.5 + NVT 92 → Specialty Coffee – NVT Platinum Grade.”

Broader Platform Features

  • Coffee Value Scoring Algorithm — multi-variable mathematical model (with weighted pillars).
  • Natural Coffee Value Index (CVI™) — a volume-weighted global benchmark similar to a stock index, but for natural coffee value.
  • Global Coffee Observatory — interactive geospatial dashboard showing high-value origins (examples: Nyeri in Kenya, Yirgacheffe in Ethiopia, etc.), climate data, and heatmaps.
  • Climate & Trajectory Forecasting — stochastic modeling of yields, prices, rainfall, and resilience.
  • Technology elements include farm GPS/soil data, satellite climate inputs, optional blockchain traceability, and mobile data collection from farmers.

Goals and Positioning

  • Give farmers better visibility and justification for premium pricing based on ecological and social performance.
  • Provide roasters, exporters, and buyers with deeper traceability and storytelling.
  • Offer investors and ESG funds a measurable natural-capital / climate-adjusted agriculture asset class.
  • Position Kenya (and the Kenya Coffee School) as the origin of “Natural Coffee Capital Economics.”

The system is designed to start with Kenyan pilot regions (e.g., Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga), expand across East Africa, then to other global origins, and eventually to other crops such as tea, cocoa, or spices.

In short, NVTS™ is an attempt to create a unified, multi-dimensional certification and indexing standard that values coffee not only for its cup quality but for the health of the ecosystems, communities, and cultures that produce it.
