NVTS™ Auditor Competency Framework, Training, Ethics and Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
9.1 Purpose
The credibility of the Natural Value Traceability System (NVTS™) depends on the competence, integrity, and professionalism of its auditors. This chapter establishes the minimum qualification requirements, competency framework, code of ethics, training pathway, performance evaluation, and continuing professional development (CPD) requirements for all personnel involved in NVTS™ certification.
9.2 Auditor Competency Framework
NVTS™ auditors shall demonstrate competence in the following areas:

9.3 Auditor Qualification Levels
Level 1 – NVTS™ Associate Auditor
Minimum Requirements
- Diploma or degree in agriculture, food science, environmental science, forestry, quality assurance, or a related discipline.
- Completion of the NVTS™ Foundation Auditor Course.
- Successful completion of the written examination.
- Participation in at least two supervised audits.
Responsibilities
- Assist Lead Auditors.
- Collect evidence.
- Conduct interviews under supervision.
- Prepare draft audit notes.
Level 2 – NVTS™ Auditor
Additional Requirements
- Completion of at least five satisfactory audits.
- Demonstrated competence in all five NVTS™ pillars.
- Positive performance evaluation.
Responsibilities
- Conduct independent audits.
- Prepare audit reports.
- Issue audit findings.
- Verify corrective actions.
Level 3 – NVTS™ Lead Auditor
Additional Requirements
- Minimum of 20 completed audits.
- Successful completion of the NVTS™ Lead Auditor Course.

- Approval by the Certification Council.
Responsibilities
- Lead audit teams.
- Manage audit schedules.
- Chair opening and closing meetings.

Level 4 – NVTS™ Principal Auditor
Additional Requirements
- Extensive auditing experience.

- Witness Lead Auditors.
- Conduct complex or high-risk audits.
- Provide technical guidance.

9.6 Witness Audits
Before qualification as a Lead Auditor, candidates shall complete witness audits observed by a Principal Auditor.
The witness assessment evaluates:

9.7 Code of Ethics
Every NVTS™ auditor shall:
✔ Act honestly and impartially.
✔ Base conclusions on objective evidence.

✔ Respect local customs and cultures.
✔ Avoid discrimination.
✔ Protect the reputation of NVTS™.
✔ Report suspected fraud or misconduct.
✔ Refrain from accepting gifts or favors that may compromise independence.
9.8 Conflict of Interest
Auditors shall declare any actual, potential, or perceived conflict of interest before accepting an assignment.
Examples include:
- Financial interests in the applicant.
- Employment relationships.
- Family connections.
- Consulting services provided to the applicant within the defined conflict period.
- Personal relationships that may impair impartiality.
Where a conflict exists, another auditor shall be assigned.
9.9 Confidentiality
Auditors shall protect all confidential information obtained during audits.
Confidential information includes:
- Production records
- Financial information
- Trade secrets
- Customer lists
- Laboratory reports
- Traceability data
- Personal information
Information shall only be disclosed when authorized or required by law.
9.10 Professional Conduct
Auditors shall:
- Arrive on time.
- Dress appropriately.
- Communicate respectfully.
- Avoid argumentative behavior.
- Listen actively.
- Record facts accurately.
- Maintain neutrality throughout the audit.
9.11 Auditor Performance Evaluation
The Certification Secretariat shall periodically evaluate auditor performance using indicators such as:

9.13 Suspension of Auditor Approval
Auditor approval may be suspended for:

- Proven conflicts of interest.
- Fraud or falsification of audit records.
Suspension shall follow documented procedures and provide the auditor with an opportunity to respond.
9.14 Auditor Recognition
The NVTS™ program may recognize exemplary auditors through awards such as:

- Emerging Auditor of the Year
- Lifetime Contribution to NVTS™
Recognition encourages professionalism and continuous improvement but does not influence certification decisions.
9.15 Auditor Records
The Certification Secretariat shall maintain records of:
- Qualifications
- Training completed
- Examinations
- Witness audits
- Performance evaluations
- CPD activities
- Complaints
- Disciplinary actions (where applicable)
These records support competency management and program integrity.
