Barista Mtaani: Solving the Youth Employment Crisis Through Skills, Internships and Career Placement

By Alfred Gitau Mwaura

At Barista Mtaani, we believe that acquiring skills should lead directly to meaningful employment. For too many young people, completing training only to remain unemployed has become an unfortunate reality. We are determined to change that.

Our mission goes beyond training. We challenge ourselves every day to use our resources, partnerships, and industry networks to create real opportunities for young people entering careers in Barista Skills, Specialty Coffee, Mixology, Bartending, and the wider Hospitality (HORECA) industry.

Our 21-Day Job Placement Commitment

Through the combined efforts of Kenya Coffee School, Barista Mtaani, and the broader network of coffee schools working under the Kenya Barista Association, we are introducing a structured placement programme designed to bridge the gap between education and employment.

Participants who enroll in the placement programme will receive active support in securing internships or employment opportunities within the hospitality industry.

We are committed to working towards placement within 21 days of eligibility under our placement programme. The service carries a KSh 15,000 placement fee, and where the agreed placement timeline is not achieved under the programme’s terms and conditions, a money-back guarantee applies.

This initiative demonstrates our confidence in our industry network and our commitment to delivering measurable results for graduates.

Partnering with the Hospitality Industry

We invite hotels, cafés, restaurants, resorts, coffee shops, hospitality groups, and all HORECA employers to partner with Barista Mtaani.

Together we can:

  • Create more internship opportunities.
  • Recruit competent and work-ready professionals.
  • Reduce youth unemployment.
  • Build a stronger and more professional hospitality workforce.
  • Promote continuous skills development across the industry.

When industry partners invest in young talent, everyone benefits—the employer, the employee, and the hospitality sector as a whole.

Insight Training for Hospitality Employees

Barista Mtaani also offers Insight Training Programmes designed specifically for hospitality establishments.

Many experienced hospitality professionals have valuable practical experience but have never received formal certification. At the same time, employers often struggle to release staff for extended periods of training.

Our solution is simple.

Working closely with hotels, cafés, restaurants, and hospitality businesses, our trainers deliver professional training directly at the employer’s premises.

This approach allows employees to:

  • Continue working while upgrading their professional skills.
  • Receive structured industry training without sacrificing their employment.
  • Improve service quality and productivity.
  • Gain confidence and industry-recognized competencies.

For employers, onsite training minimizes operational disruption while creating a culture of continuous learning and professional excellence.

Building Careers, Not Just Certificates

At Barista Mtaani, our success is measured not only by the number of people we train, but by the number of lives transformed through meaningful employment.

We are building a future where skills lead to opportunity, opportunity leads to employment, and employment leads to dignified livelihoods for Kenya’s youth.

Together with our training partners, employers, and the hospitality industry, we are proving that unemployment is not inevitable—it is a challenge that can be solved through collaboration, innovation, and commitment.
