Introduction

The success of a coffee plantation begins long before the first seedling is planted. Choosing the right location and preparing the land properly are among the most important decisions a coffee farmer will make.

A coffee plantation may remain productive for 30–50 years or more. Mistakes made during site selection or land preparation can reduce productivity for decades, while careful planning creates the foundation for healthy trees, high yields, and premium-quality coffee.

Site selection involves evaluating the physical, biological, climatic, and socioeconomic characteristics of a location to determine whether it is suitable for coffee cultivation.
