The Coffee Seal™ Charter

By Kenya Coffee School

Founded by Alfred Gitau Mwaura

Restoring Coffee to Its Origin. Elevating Africa to Global Leadership.

The Coffee Seal™ is a voluntary commitment and recognition framework established by Kenya Coffee School to champion authentic African coffee excellence. It is founded on the belief that coffee’s greatest value should be created, protected, and celebrated at its origin.

The Coffee Seal™ is guided by ten foundational principles.

1. Origin First

Every coffee-producing community deserves recognition as the foundation of the global coffee industry. Origin is not simply a location—it is identity, culture, biodiversity, and history.

2. Farmers First

No coffee industry can thrive while farmers remain the least rewarded participants in the value chain. The Coffee Seal™ supports equitable pricing, knowledge transfer, regenerative agriculture, and long-term prosperity for coffee-growing communities.

3. Education Before Certification

Competence creates credibility. Every Coffee Seal™ participant is encouraged to pursue continuous education in coffee production, processing, roasting, sensory science, brewing, sustainability, business management, and innovation through Kenya Coffee School and its partners.

4. Value Addition at Origin

African nations should increasingly roast, package, brand, research, and market their own coffees. Greater value retained at origin strengthens rural economies, creates employment, and builds globally competitive coffee enterprises.

5. Quality Without Compromise

Coffee excellence begins on the farm and continues through harvesting, processing, storage, roasting, brewing, and customer experience. The Coffee Seal™ promotes consistent quality systems founded on transparency and continuous improvement.

6. Sustainability and Regeneration

Healthy soils, clean water, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and responsible resource management are essential for the future of coffee. Sustainability is not an option—it is a responsibility.

7. Transparency and Traceability

Every coffee should tell its story—from farm to cup. The Coffee Seal™ supports transparent supply chains, ethical sourcing, digital traceability, and consumer confidence.

8. Innovation Rooted in African Knowledge

Innovation should empower producers while respecting indigenous wisdom. Scientific research, digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and modern processing techniques should complement, not replace, local expertise.

9. Ethical Trade

Coffee should never exploit those who grow it. Ethical business practices, integrity, accountability, and fairness must define relationships throughout the coffee value chain.

10. Global Collaboration

The Coffee Seal™ welcomes collaboration with coffee-producing and coffee-consuming nations, research institutions, governments, cooperatives, cafés, and industry leaders who share the vision of a more equitable and sustainable coffee future.
