Barista Mtaani a project by Kenya Coffee School goes beyond technical coffee training—we integrate hands-on skills, business acumen, digitalization, and community-focused enterprise models so that youth and women can participate meaningfully in the coffee value chain, from bean to business.


Focus: Crafting exceptional coffee beverages to specialty standards.
Training Includes:

  • Espresso preparation, grinder calibration, milk steaming, latte art.
  • Brewing mastery: pour-over, AeroPress, cold brew, siphon, French press.
  • Coffee sensory skills: tasting, cupping, and flavor profiling.
    Impact: Prepares youth for employment in cafés, hotels, and event catering, while setting a foundation for entrepreneurship.

Focus: Turning raw coffee into branded, value-added products.
Training Includes:

  • Roast profiling for flavor optimization.
  • Small- and large-batch roasting techniques.
  • Packaging design, labeling, and shelf-life management.
  • Developing signature blends and flavored coffees.
    Impact: Enables youth to capture higher profit margins and create distinctive Kenyan coffee brands.

Focus: Low-cost, high-impact entrepreneurship.
Training Includes:

  • Setting up and managing a coffee kiosk or mini café.
  • Daily operations: stock management, cash flow, hygiene, and customer service.
  • Location scouting and market targeting.
    Impact: Creates immediate self-employment opportunities with a scalable model via franchising.

Training Includes:

  • POS systems, mobile payment integration (M-Pesa, card, QR payments).
  • Social media marketing and content creation.
  • Online sales via Barista Mtaani Coffee Auction marketplace.
